This is a recipe that always puts a smile on my face. It brings me back to my childhood where this was a favorite supper my Mom would prepare when my Dad was out of town. It was my first experience with the flavors of worcestershire and mustard and I was hooked right from the start. This recipe almost seems too easy, but it is such a classic and the French's products really shine so I just couldn't resist submitting it.
Ingredients:
2 tsp FRENCH'S® Horseradish Mustard
2 tsp FRENCH'S® Classic Worcestershire Sauce
2 tbsp unsalted butter
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
1 cup half & half
.25 tsp hot pepper sauce
8 oz extra sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
8 sourdough bread, 1/2" thick slices
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
Directions:
Melt the butter in a medium saucepan, then add the flour and cook over low/medium heat for about 3 minutes, stirring frequently. Whisk in the half and half and cook, stirring constantly until the sauce is smooth and creamy, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in the French's Horseradish Mustard, French's Classic Worcestershire Sauce, salt, pepper and hot sauce. Add the extra sharp cheddar cheese and cook, stirring frequently over medium heat until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth and bubbling. Toast the sourdough bread slices and place two pieces on each plate. Spoon the Welsh Rarebit over the toast and serve hot.
If you prefer, other bread can be substituted for the sourdough. Toasted English muffins are also a good choice.
