Every time I make this I think of my maw-maw (grandma) and appreciate her dragging me into the kitchen everyday to teach me how to cook. My son who is 10 has decided we must write all my recipes down so when he goes to college he can cook and just in case he gets married and his wife can't cook like mom, he will know how to. Its all about family traditions for me.
Ingredients:
5 tbsp FRENCH'S® Classic Yellow® Mustard
1/2 cup FRENCH'S® French Fried Onions
4 oz 4 cube steaks
1/2 cup Flour
3/4 cup buttermilk
1 cup Finely Crushed Saltine Crackers
5 tbsp Shortening
2 tbsp Melted Butter
1/2 tsp pepper
Directions:
Combine mustard and melted butter in a small bowl. combine flour and pepper in a shallow dish. Crush fried onions and crackers together and spread onto a plate. Spread melted butter and mustard mixture on the front and back of steaks, dredge through flour mixture, then dip into buttermilk, last press into cracker and fried onion mixture (both sides). Melt shortening over medium heat in fry pan add steaks and cook 2-3 minutes on each side until brown.
I serve with homemade gravy from drippings or canned beef gravy with mashed taters and corn. It is a great meal on a cold eveing after work. My grandmother taught me many years ago to make this.
